CPR Frequently Asked Questions

+When are the classes offered?

The CPR and First Aid classes are offered on a rolling schedule depending on the availability of instructors.

+I used to be certified in CPR and First Aid, but my cards are expired, can I just take a refresher course?

To be eligible for CPR recertification you must take the recertification course for your designated level of training within 30 days of the expiration of your current certification. After that period you must retake the entire course. We currently do not offer a first aid refresher; it is our philosophy that all students need to retake the course periodically to ensure their retention of the knowledge and skills of first aid.

+ I already have my CPR certification are you going to offer a First Aid only course?

Unfortunately, we will not be offering a first aid only course at this time. As we currently have the course set up, the 24-hour advanced first aid course includes CPR in the curriculum. So even if you already have your CPR card, this will serve as a good refresher and quality check of your skills.

+Can I get college credit for taking this course through continuing education?

These courses are not designed to provide students with college credit, but rather the certification cards required by many internship sites, teaching experience sites, and summer camps that TAMU students must take part in or are employed. *If you are a Community Health Major or School Health Major you need to view the recent policy change by the Division of Health Education at HLTH 216 Course Waiver Policy

+Do you offer Red Cross Certification?

No, we only offer certification cards through the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

+Do I have to take the class offered by Continuing Education?

No, you don't, however, you must make sure your first aid class specifies the length of the course. The courses offered through continuing education have been designed to mimic HLTH 216, i.e.,...it's the same material. If you take another first aid course, you might not get the same level of training.

+Can I take the class any time I want to?

The classes are offered about once a month. However, you need to make sure you take them before your internship or teaching experience.

+I have American Red Cross certification cards, can I use these for the waiver?

Right now the answer is no. While many employers recognize the Red Cross certification, it has been our experience that many of the internship sites Dr. Elledge has contacted prefer the American Heart Association CPR. If you plan on interning in a hospital or clinic environment most of them require AHA CPR certification.
